Tips for Travelling in Cuba During the SpringHavana and Vinales Offer History and Beautiful Panoramic Scenery
While the south of the island is the best location for good weather during the Cuban winter, temperatures balance out during spring, and the north has plenty to offer.
Cuba offers warm weather all year round, but the best time to visit the island is between November and April, as this is the dry season. However, it can be quite cool in the north of the island during the Cuban winter, which coincides with that in the northern hemisphere. So the Cuban spring in March and April is the best time to visit the top half of the island. This article provides some ideas about where to visit. Average Cuban Temperatures in Winter and SpringThe Cuba Weather website provides charts with the average temperatures for many Cuban cities throughout the year. For example, the average February twenty-four hours temperature for Havana in the north is 21 Celsius (70 Fahrenheit), while Santiago de Cuba in the south is 24c / 76f. There is not such a difference in May, with Havana at 25 / 78 and Santiago at 26 / 79. Havana is Living HistoryWalking through Havana, history hits you from all directions. Whether it is the old Spanish fort guarding the harbour, the grand buildings and churches that date from early in the twentieth century, or the 1950s American cars that chug around the streets as if they've just driven out of an episode of Happy Days. Beaches Near HavanaPlayas del Este provides white sandy beaches and cobalt blue seas just twelve miles (18km) east of Havana. There hours east of Havana is Varadero, which provides miles of unbroken beach, although it is quite built-up now. West of Havana to VinalesThree hours west of Havana in the Pinar del Rio region is the small town of Vinales. Arriving at the Valle de Vinales is an unforgettable experience, as the panoramic views are world class. The valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, spreads out for miles below the viewing area, with mogote limestone rocks filling the centre, and the Sierra de Vinales mountains stretching across the horizon. Beaches Near VinalesSouth-west of Vinales is Playa Bailen, while Playa Las Tumbas is right on the tip of the Pinar peninsula. You can book day trips to Playa Maria la Gordo in Vinales; it takes three hours each way. Scuba dives and lunch can be taken on the trip. Buses from HavanaTourists are supposed to travel on Viazul buses, with locals using Transtur. The Terminal de Omnibus in the Vedado district houses the Viazul bus depot, and buses to Varadero and Vinales can be boarded there. Tickets are also available at the depot, or from travel agencies in the city centre. Local buses run to Playas del Este, although it is probably better to take a taxi if affordable.
