First decide what to look for in a vacation resort; adventure, a quiet, relaxing respite, a party atmosphere or a fun family vacation.
Start off by doing some research either online or by studying travel pamphlets. Also, talk to a knowledgeable travel agent. Someone who has been to the resorts and has first-hand knowledge of the area. Senior vacationers don't want to end up at an all-inclusive resort where young people are drinking and partying day and night. Look for a Large Enough Beach ResortFor those who like to get away for quiet walks on the beach or to relax under a palm tree, make sure the beach area is large enough so everyone is not squeezed cheek to jowl on a lounge chairs listening to each others loud conversations. People who are not child friendly should avoid resorts that cater to family vacations. Many hotels offer adults only all- inclusive packages. What Kind of Amenities Does the Resort Offer?Selection of a hotel or vacation resort is often based on the area or the kinds of services offered. Many people like water sports, shopping, museums or visiting historical sites. Others are just looking to spend a week or two relaxing around the pool with a good book. Do watch out for cheap all-inclusive packages. If the resort has been given less than four stars, the facilities may not be up to your high standards. Time of Year can be a Deciding FactorNext, decide when to travel. Many people in North America chose winter travel to get a respite from the cold. But be aware that the hurricane season in the Caribbean runs from June to November and peaks in mid-September. Mother Nature can be fickle, however, and storms and hurricanes can strike on earlier or later dates. Tour companies offer a variety of packages including: all-inclusive, which as the name indicates, includes everything, lodging, meals, entertainment and drinks. With this package, many choose to never leave the resort. But they still have the option of paying extra for excursions and transportation to other areas. Almost-Inclusive or European PackageFor those wanting to absorb some local culture, an Almost-Inclusive or European Package may be the best choice. This means paying for only accommodation and maybe a few meals, everything else is extra. When choosing either of these options be sure to stay in a hotel or resort within walking distance or a short cab ride from cities or shopping areas. Reviews on web sites like, Trip Advisor can be a good source of information. Just understand, many people writing reviews are those who feel they have had a bad experience. Food is an especially common complaint. But with so much international travel, cuisine is a matter of taste and resorts can't be expected to please every palate. Show Respect for the Caribbean CultureSince the late 1990s, Cuba has become a premier destination for Canadians. Cuba is the largest of the Caribbean islands and the people are warm and friendly. Realize, however, that the Caribbean consists of third world countries. Therefore, those venturing outside the resorts may see signs of poverty. The most important thing to remember, whether visiting cities or resorts, is to show respect for the country and its people. The rewards will include not only a restful vacation, but an introduction to the charm of another way of life.
